The dealer quotes you $399 a month. Here's what the car actually costs.

Car sites show you the sticker. Dealers steer you to the monthly payment. The number that actually leaves your bank account, with your state's tax, title and fees in, is the one nobody prints.

CarFinder prints it, on every car, for your state. And now on every motorcycle, scooter, boat, jet ski, plane, business jet and helicopter too, with a photo of each. It runs in your browser, on a phone too, and asks for nothing: no account, no email, no phone number.

Thirty seconds, no sign-up, no sales pitch.

Every clip is the real page, recorded from the app in a headless browser. Pick a state and watch the drive-off prices move, switch from cars to bikes to boats to aircraft and watch every filter change with them, or open a card on a phone and drag the trim slider.

Changing the state from California to Texas to Oregon: the drive-off price on every card recomputes; then the SUV and Hybrid chips narrow the list
Your state, every price

Pick a state. Every price moves.

California, Texas, Oregon: the sticker stays, the drive-off number changes with sales tax, doc fee and plates. Then two taps narrow 414 cars to hybrid SUVs.

Switching from Cars to Motorcycles to Boats to Aircraft: the body-type chips, filters and prices change to scooters and engine sizes, jet skis and boat lengths, then helicopters, knots and nautical miles
Cars · bikes · boats · aircraft

Four kinds of vehicle, one page.

Switch to motorcycles and the filters become engine size and transmission; to boats and they become length, propulsion and fuel burn per hour; to aircraft and they become seats, engines, range in nautical miles and fuel burn. Photos, prices and fees follow.

On a phone: tapping a card opens the cost breakdown, the trim slider raises the total from base to top trim, then a price preset in the filter sheet narrows the list
On your phone

Built for the dealership parking lot.

Tap a card for the breakdown from sticker to drive-off, drag the trim slider, scroll the fee lines, then set a budget in the filter sheet. 44 px targets, one hand.

Why this exists

“What's your monthly budget?” is the oldest trick on the lot.

It works because you don't know the drive-off number. You can't hold a $42,000 sticker and a $399 payment in your head at the same time, so you negotiate against yourself. CarFinder breaks the trick by putting all three prices on every card.

  • ListThe maker's price, from the base trim to the top one, with the mandatory destination charge underneath.
  • DealerThe band dealers really sell that model in this month: at sticker, a little under, or deep discounts.
  • Drive-offThe estimated total once your state's tax, title, doc fee and registration are added. The number that leaves your account.

Here is the trick in numbers. A monthly payment is a price with the term hidden inside it. Keep the payment the same, stretch the loan, and a more expensive car fits the same “budget.” The dealer chooses the term.

The table uses the loan defaults on CarFinder's US tab: 7% APR and 10% down. The $399 and $42,000 above are example figures; the math is real, and you can change every assumption on the page.

$399 a month buys a car priced at about
60 months$22,400
72 months$26,000
84 months$29,400
Same payment, spread$7,000

Now you walk in knowing the number. Bargain inside it. Never accept above it.

Try it on your own state

Pick your state. Watch every price move.

Choose a US state, an Indian state, a Chinese city, an Australian state, a Mexican estado, a Spanish region, a Russian region, a Brazilian state or a Canadian province, and every drive-off price on the page recomputes with its sales tax, road tax, plates, registration, insurance and rebates. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

  1. Pick cars, motorcycles, boats or aircraft, then your country

The four buttons at the very top switch the kind of vehicle; the country tabs under them switch the whole page: the vehicles, the price basis (MSRP, ex-showroom, OTR, 指导价, RRP, ride-away…), the tax rules and the glossary. World pools every country in one list.

  2. Pick your state or city

The picker under the search bar (next to it on a desktop) sets the taxes and fees. Every drive-off price recomputes for it, and the page remembers your choice in your own browser.

  3. Narrow it down

Tap the body-type and fuel chips, or open Filters for price range, size, brand tier, seats, drivetrain, minimum MPG and minimum electric range. For bikes the filters become engine size and transmission; for boats, length, capacity, propulsion and fuel burn; for aircraft, seats, engines, minimum range and fuel burn per hour. Or press Help me choose and answer four questions.

  4. Sort by what matters to you

Price, lowest yearly fuel cost, best MPG, longest electric range, most horsepower, cheapest per horsepower, most seats. On a phone the sort lives behind the ⇅ button next to the search box.

  5. Open a card, then compare

Tap any card for its photo, the cost breakdown and the trim slider from base to top trim. Tap + Compare on up to four cards and see them side by side.

The same car, eleven prices.

Each tab starts from the price that country actually publishes and adds what that country actually charges. The rules were researched market by market and are written down in the repository.

What it feels like

Sit down already holding the dealer's playbook.

Every card answers the questions the salesperson would rather you didn't ask: is this model selling at sticker or sitting on the lot, which fees are real, and which ones you can push back on.

01Is this car hot or sitting?
The market badge says it plainly. Red: sells at or above sticker, expect a wait. Grey-blue: small discounts are typical. Green: big discounts and incentives; this is where the deals are.
02What should I actually pay?
The drive-off range starts from the sticker, applies the typical dealer discount or markup for that model, then adds your state's tax, a typical doc fee and registration. Bargain within it; don't accept above it.
03Which lines can I negotiate?
Open a car and drag the trim slider from base to fully loaded. The breakdown updates line by line: destination, discount, tax, doc fee, registration, insurance, grants, each with a note on what it is and whether you can negotiate it.
04What do I say to the dealer?
The Why this price band panel explains the market for that model and what to ask the dealer.
05What does it cost after I drive off?
Yearly fuel or charging cost at your local prices and distance, an estimated monthly payment, and the assumptions behind them, all editable. You set the term, not the dealer.

One file

Markup, CSS, plain JavaScript and the data in one self-contained HTML page. It keeps working offline once loaded.

Open data

Each country's cars, bikes, boats and aircraft are JSON files with a documented row schema; each country's car taxes are one function and its bike, boat and aircraft fees one table each. MIT licence. A wrong rate is a one-line fix and a pull request.

Tested before it ships

node --test checks every row of every dataset, then runs the pricing engines for all 97,000 vehicle-and-region combinations and checks known quotes. A headless Chromium pass drives every tab and control of all four verticals at phone and desktop widths.

Every price shows its source

Each detail sheet links the maker's build-and-price page, says when the list was compiled, which of four states the row is in (checked, listed, converted or estimated) and why, and which region's rules were applied with the state page behind them, and has Wrong price? Tell us (a prefilled issue) and Copy the details (no account needed). How we calculate publishes every tax table with its sources, the dealer bands, the dated exchange rates and a measured data-quality scorecard, generated from the same data the app ships with.

Estimates, labelled as estimates

Dealer prices are bands by demand level, not quotes. Taxes follow the published rules on the compile date. Every tab ends with a plain note on what was assumed; modelled prices carry an Estimate tag and lists converted from another currency a Converted tag, and the masthead counts both.

Portrait of Destin Jones, creator of CarFinder
Made in the open

Built by one guy, with an AI, in the open.

I had the question every first-time buyer has, “what will this actually cost me?”, and instead of googling it fifty times I described the tool I wanted and vibe coded it with Claude. I set the direction and made the calls. Claude did the research and the heavy lifting on the code. All of it ships here in the open, so you can check every number.

Read it. Fork it. Fix a price. Take it further. Same way I built Open Overwatch, a live map of the whole planet, and Ironbound, an open source RTS.

Before you go

Use it as a starting point, not a quote.

Car prices were compiled on 29 September 2026, motorcycle and boat prices on 10 October 2026 and aircraft on 12 October 2026, from manufacturer price lists and the main listing sites in each country; most bike and boat rows outside the US are estimates until a published price list is found, and every aircraft outside the US is converted from the maker's dollar or euro list at a dated exchange rate, so the local price moves with the rate. Incentives, fuel prices and exchange rates move monthly, and tax rules change with budgets. Always get the out-the-door price in writing from two or three dealers. If you spot a wrong price or rate, open an issue or fix the JSON and send a pull request.

The dealer hopes you never open this. Open it.
